CHAPTER XIX
MR. BATHURST TESTS HIS THEORY
(From the Rector’s MSS. Continued.)
“But how do you know the photograph was taken in Tacoma?” I asked.
Bathurst’s eyes twinkled at the direct nature of my question. He parried it, however.
“I don’t know, Rector. What I said was that I would assert so with confidence. That’s a wee bit different, you know.”
I returned to the attack. “That’s true,” I admitted, “and I’ll take what you say at its exact face value. Why are you prepared to bank so thoroughly on the Tacoma connection with the photograph? You must have a very good reason for saying what you have done. What did you see in it that wasn’t apparent to me?”
This time he definitely put me off. “Ah, Rector—for a short time at least you must allow me to keep my little secret. After all, if the men of the photograph excited your attention, it was only a natural occurrence, and I for one cannot blame you. All I will say is that what you called a weapon wasn’t a weapon at all,” he grinned, “although no doubt it had been very close to one. Have you such a thing as an ABC handy?” Michael got him ours. “I feel so strongly, Rector, about this strange disappearance of Roland Trevor, that I’m going to have a look into it personally. And the best place for me to do that will be in the before-mentioned City of Liverpool. There I can interview the missing man’s daughter, his solicitors, and, best of all, I hope, this gentleman Mallinson, who has already filled two roles, it appears, in connection with Trevor—the role of farm-assistant and, after that, of companion-traveller. Who knows that he hasn’t filled a third? I confess that I find Mr. James B. Mallinson a distinctly interesting personality. Then there is such a place as Crosby’s Commercial Hotel. Let’s find a train. I shan’t go by car. I suppose I shall have to change at Polchester, shan’t I?”
“You will,” I returned. “Do you intend to go at once?”
“There’s an eleven forty-four,” he observed upon inspection of the time-table. “That will do me very nicely.” He rose and flicked the knees of his trousers with his handkerchief. “Well, Rector, my stay with you hasn’t been of very long duration, but I’m sure you understand. If I may, I’ll trespass on your kindness again and come back.”
“You will be very welcome.”
“Many thanks, then—although I can’t say to a day or so when it’s likely to be. I’ll leave it at this—expect me when you see me.”
“Don’t worry about that,” I returned; “we’ll be ready for you all right. Michael will accompany you to the station.”
“Good! Tell him I’ll be fit within a quarter of an hour.”
Within half an hour he had not only left us, but Michael was back to the house again with the big Crossley. I am, of course, indebted to Bathurst himself for an account of what transpired upon his arrival in Lancashire. To use his own
